Reflexion 4:Response to a question about English teaching

This is the question that I answered:

Using Music to Teach English Language Learners

by CA on Mar 20 2007 2:31 PM

Hello,

I was wondering if you have any thoughts or ideas as to what lessons can be taught if one incorporates music in the classroom? For example, many songs have themes to them that can be taught to students (i.e.: forgiveness). But I would like to know if there any resources out there that can guide me in creating an effective lesson plan that incorporates music. Thank you.

It is undeniable the benefits of teaching through Music. I think that most of people in the world like music. Besides, it is incredible how many thinks you can do with it. Indeed, you can dance, sing, learn, teach, and so on.
During my learning and teaching experiences I have realized that you can use music to do whatever you want. For example, you would use:

- TPR while you are singing with your students.
- A song to teach acceptance, respect, love, peace, self- steem or friendship.
- Music to create a play in which your students would act.
- Song to play a game (e.g. Simon Says).
- Listening to a song to develop students' critical thinking (e.g Beautiful by Christina Aguilera )
- Music to inspire your students to create their own song or poems.

I really recommend you to use music in your lessons. Keep working. I know your students will improve their learning.

I responded this question as I did because it is one of my favorite ways of learning, and teaching. I answered the way I did because I am sure music can move minds, and hearts. In addition, students can learn English easily through the music. Furthermore, every example I wrote are part of what I have seen, and practiced.

Finally, I totally believe that every student can learn. I know that some of them try harder than others but you can help your students to find an easy way of learning. In this case using music to learn. I believe that teachers are the guide that provide the necessary tools to teach how to be an autonomous learner.
